Our Story
Our story is pretty simple. The short version is that we met and realized we're a perfect match--something that neither of us thought existed.
Gavin came to interview for a faculty position at UAB's Department of Neurobiology where I had recently started working as a postdoc. The department was a great fit for Gavin, so he returned a month later to start checking out the neighborhoods in Birmingham. Alicia and I showed Gavin around the loft district where we live and the three of us ended up spending the afternoon together. Later that evening, Alicia accused me of flirting with Gavin. I had to laugh because the truth was, I honestly hadn't been flirting. People in Birmingham just hadn't seen me laugh like that before because I hadn't met anyone like him since leaving California months earlier. He was like a breath of fresh air in the middle of humid Alabama--someone that understood exactly the kinds of things that make me laugh so hard my cheeks hurt!
Gavin returned to Baltimore a couple of days later, but he and I were both sure we'd made a great friend, which we both found reassuring. Great friendships are hard to come by, especially with the nomadic life of a scientist.
It took us both by surprise when the friendship quickly became something even better. I discovered that Gavin is the kindest, funniest, most caring, loving, super smart guy I've ever had the pleasure of meeting--and the best part was that he thought I was just as great!
Within months I found myself sitting in the Baltimore airport looking at the love of my life and saying "yes!" (I've never been more sure of anything in my life--and for those of you that know me well--that's saying something!) He slid the ring on my finger and we've been impatiently counting down the days to our wedding ever since. We really hope that you can all make it to Mexico to celebrate with us!
